Dallas: Terilli's

The entire building that housed Terilli's, Mick's, and Hurricane Bar burned to the ground this morning. Right now efforts are being made to save the facades of the Greenville Avenue nightlife haunts. Click here for updates on The Dallas Observer.

Austin: Hole plays SXSW

Seems that Courtney Love has gotten it together enough to play Hole's first US gig in 10 years during SXSW at Spin Magazine's party at Stubbs on March 19. Have you seen this month's issue? Love is the cover story and inside she talks about her daughter - the one that was recently taken out of her custody - and why it took five years to complete the new album. She may be polarizing as a person, but I'm always so taken by the visceral nature of her music - "Yes, I feel that way, too!" - that it makes me a dedicated fan to the musician.
Hole's new album, Nobody's Daughter, will be released by Mercury/Island Def Jam on April 27.

Austin: Justine's 1937

The last few times I've spoken to my friend Elaine she's told me about Justine's 1937, a fabulous little French restaurant on the east, east side of Austin. It's a bit off the beaten track and that's part of the charm of it all. Well, that and the glorious food. It's been written about a ton, but I feel like I must make mention of it for those of you who aren't in Austin to read the Chronicle or any of the other local pubs. It's cozy and bustling with people and if you're in the mood for a heap of classic steak tartare, soup de ardennes (everyone loves a good potato leek soup), filet de poisson, or steak frites, promise that you'll try it, mkay?

Weekend project

The time had come this weekend to officially move my 2 year old, P, into a twin bed - bye, bye crib - and my 5 year old, C, into a double. P got C's twin bed (will post pics of that next week) and C got a new double. I decided that I would make a headboard myself (read: Mr. H would make it while bossed about by me) and I'm pretty thrilled with the results. He cut the plywood, and we stapled the batting and white cotton twill to the back of the wood frame.
I bought this nail head trim at Joanne's and we hammered away.
The entire reason behind making it myself is because I wanted my son and his friends to personalize it...to doodle, to draw, to scribble whatever they want on it. Since this was only about 2 hours of work and $60 to make, it was a fun solution to what would have been an otherwise way-too-formal-for-a-5-year-old-headboard.
I think it looks beautiful and I can't wait to see what fun characters and scenes he and his friends will scrawl on it.
C said I could draw something first since my birthday is around the corner.
I'll post pics as his artwork progresses on it. To see what his bed used to look like, click here for the feature that Christopher Wynn did on my home a couple of years ago.

Dallas: Feel the love

Seems I'm not the only one having a love affair with my lovely city. Sandra Ballentine did a wonderful shopping report on Dallas in the Get section of yesterday's T Magazine that came along with Sunday's New York Times. Kudos to her for a perfectly precise intro that goes beyond the tired cliche. Click here and turn to page 98 to have a peek at her top picks.

And this month's Departures Magazine focuses on the new Dallas. As soon as they have the March issue online, I'll post a link, but suffice to say that Departures and T were on the same page when it came to the best places to shop: VOD, Cabana, Grange Hall, Forty Five Ten, Ceylon et Cie, etc...
