Dallas: Our Calatrava

Is anyone else ecstatic to see the Santiago Calatrava-designed Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge going up piece by piece? You can watch the live webcam of it here. I drove by today and I let out a yelp at the sight of it. What an amazing city we live in.

  1. But other than being pretty, it really has no other purpose. Are they gonna renovate West Dallas too?

  2. I wholeheartedly disagree with you. The Calatrava does have a purpose: it's art. Art and economy are very connected to one another. A population that values art and creativity also values innovation in business, and has an openness to new ideas. Cities such as Rome, New York, Paris - the cities of the world that are considered tops when it comes to an intellectual class - also have the most sought after art collections, public art, and museum. Art and commerce feed off one another, they push each other forward. Without one or the other, a city is dead.

  3. Agreed! It's amazing. It's inspiring, an impressive work of art to admire especially during the building phase! My kids are wowed by the construction! Love it!

  4. Also, I wish they'd leave the green space around it just that. The development means the destruction to birds and wildlife that call it home. And have you ever seen that area during a heavy rainfall? It's not exactly a crowd friendly place.
